Not 'drivers'
To the Editors:
COMMUNITY FORUM
Please don't refer to us as "EMS drivers" or "ambulance drivers!" ["EMS drivers say AIDS was not the issue," Dec. 22.]
As an out Paramedic not only in the field but as an EMS educator, I must remind people that EMS is a profession and that we are all highly skilled and trained to assist the public who call 911 in many aspects, and yes sometimes we do really save their lives without "heroics." As for the article, most of us who are smart enough and who know those two medics, realize that the decision was tuff to make and frankly we weren't there to make judgement on their call! Good luck to them both.

An anti-gay remark every five minutes
To the Editors:
Thank you very much for your marvelous article ["Tell America that killing 'in God's name' happens here, too," Dec. 8]. Now living in Ohio, I spent the last 15 years in North Carolina where religious hate flourishes. I had the privilege to vote against Jesse Helms in two elections. In the last election, I worked for his opponent, Harvey Gantt.
Jesse mounted a hate campaign against Harvey centering on lesbians and gays.
His television and radio spots assailed Mr. Gantt for supporting lesbians and gays through the very type of rhetoric you describe in your article. A spot that ran for many months went like this:
(Picture of a gay bar)
"This a a gay bar in San Francisco." On (x date) they had a fundraiser to gather funds for Harvey Gantt."

(Bad picture of Gantt)
"Most of Harvey Gantt funding comes from radical homosexuals out of our state."
(Picture of Gantt next a picture of Ted Kennedy)
"Harvey Gantt: Another Kennedy liberal," or variation, "Harvey Gantt, dangerously liberal for North Carolina."
Jesse used the last three days of the election to shift from anti-gay rhetoric to racial hate baiting: Mr. Gantt is African-American. His spot was particularly mean-spirited and appealed to hate and fear.
Jesse received much support from the religious leaders you mentioned, Falwell and Robertson. During the presidential election in '92, Pat Robertson was particularly voracious. He spewed venon against lesbians and gays every day.
While channel-surfing, I found Pat would

make an anti-gay remark within five minutes after I selected his channel. I began an informal study to check the hypothesis that a random extract of Pat Robertson television rhetoric would include one or more hateful remarks about lesbians and gays, A friend helped me. We surveyed all the way to the election, and between us, after having checked daily for many months, we could count only two occasions where Pat did not mention lesbians or gays for a five-minute period! On both of those occasions, he was asking for money.
As you can see, I identified with all you had to say. I applaud your clear, well-written analysis of religious hate and violence in our world. Many people over the world are suffering as a result of hate justified through religion, and more attention needs to be given to this problem. We need an organization similar to Amnesty International, but the focus here would be on victims of religious hatefulness.

It was to my surprise that I found my article, "Don't ignore Christianity as a source of inspiration" criticized by a Humanist [Forum, Jan. 12]. Did I miss something? I had to ask myself.
Grabbing a copy of The Humanist Frame by Sir Julian Huxley, I read his opening dissertation. On page 44, he acknowledged that the world owes a great debt to Christian ethics. On page 41, he states:
"Although destructive criticism of established religious systems, such as that of orthodox Christianity by militant Rationalism around the turn of the nineteenth century, may be necessary at certain periods, the time for negative activities is now past."

He continues: "What the world needs now is not merely a rationalist denial of the old but a religious affirmation of something new."
I do not know what you personally believe, but the Metropolitan Community churches could be a necessary step in a needed affirmation of something new. I am not a Christian. The article was an out-growth of an exploration I am making of religious diversity in my local area.
It is my hope that your chapter of the Humanist Community is not reveling in the childish mocking of another's belief current among national polemists. The heated atmosphere surrounding religion and politics has left many afraid to examine their own personal beliefs. Denouncing a system of beliefs is destructive and only contributes towards the believer's further alienation from humanity.
